Scholars Debate Interpretation of SF-36ℬ Summary Health Measures
09-08-2001
In Volume 10, No. 5, issue of Quality of Life Research, international scholars debate the meaningfulness and interpretation of the physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summary measures scored from the SF-36™ Health Survey. Taft, Karlsson and Sullivan question the accuracy of PCS and MCS scores, particularly very high and low scores. In response, Ware and Kosinski (QOLR, 2001) summarize results from new and published studies of the validity of extreme PCS and MCS scores. Additional information including comparisons of profiles and orthogonal and oblique summary scores and citations to 124 published studies of the PCS and MCS summary measures are also made available here. The scoring utilities used by Ware and Kosinski in re-analyzing studies of SF-36 summary measures are also made available here.
