The SF-36 Physical and Mental Health Summary Scales: A Manual for Users - Just Published
The SF-36 Physical and Mental Health Summary Scales: A Manual for Users
of Version 1, Second Edition, is a comprehensive 237-page manual written as a
companion to the SF-36 Health Survey Manual and Interpretation Guide which documents the development,
psychometric evaluation, and norming of the physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summary measures
based upon the SF-36 Health Survey, Version 1 (v1). The second edition provides comparable information
for the original 1990 and new 1998 norms for PCS and MCS (v1) and provides other interpretation guidelines.
In addition, this edition, for the first time, documents the scoring of PCS and MCS summary measures as well
as norms for the acute (1-week recall) version of the SF-36 (v1). Among its improvements, this manual introduces norm-based scoring (NBS) for the eight SF-36 scales
and two summary measures scored from the SF-36 (v1), and presents results from numerous psychometric
evaluations conducted following publication of the first edition. For the convenience of those using the means and variances from the original 1990 SF-36 norming
study, this latest edition reproduces both the 1990 scoring algorithms and 1990 norms chapters
(First Edition, Chapters 4 and 8, respectively). Noting that 44 studies of the PCS and MCS were
published based on the first edition, reproducing the above chapters will also prove valuable in
referencing the methods and results cited in those studies; references for all 44 studies have
been included. To find out more about this latest addition to the SF product library or about other QualityMetric initiatives, please visit us at www.qualitymetric.com |
