QualityMetric and invivodata Join Forces to Optimize Health Outcome Assessments for Handheld Devices Used in Clinical Trials
03-26-2001
Partnership unveiled at DIA Quality of Life Evaluation Symposium
HILTON HEAD, SC (March 26, 2001) – QualityMetric, Inc., developers of the industry’s most widely used health outcome
assessments, and invivodata, inc., scientific experts in the collection of real-world patient experience data in clinical trials,
have formed a partnership to adapt a family of QualityMetric assessment tools to a handheld platform. While these assessments
are primarily administered using printed questionnaires or on computers today, the new collaboration makes possible the use of
handheld devices to administer these assessments.
QualityMetric outcome assessment tools, SF-36®, SF-12® and SF-8™ Health Surveys, are recognized as standards
for monitoring health outcomes from the patient point-of-view. SF-36 is the most widely used patient-based health status survey
in the world. It has been translated into more than 40 languages and the subject of more than 2,000 peer-reviewed publications
worldwide. SF-12 generates an abbreviated health profile consisting of two summary measures of physical and mental health.
SF-8 does the same with even fewer questions and represents a major advance in the application of SF technology to achieve both
brevity and comprehensiveness in U.S. and international population surveys. SF-8 is currently being used by such organizations
as the Department of Defense, Roper-Starch Worldwide, GlaxoSmithKline, and Johnson & Johnson.
“We are pleased to work with invivodata to optimize these proven assessments for administration using handheld devices,” said
John E. Ware, Ph.D., CEO of QualityMetric. “invivodata’s experience in collecting real-world patient assessments using handheld
technology, grounded as it is in solid behavioral science, makes them a natural partner for us.”
invivodata, inc. brings years of experience in the development, validation, and deployment of subjective assessments of patient
experience in real time and in the study subjects’ natural environment. invivodata’s handheld platform, invivosystem, also boasts
superior patient compliance with study protocols, regularly achieving mean compliance rates above 95% over the course of a trial.
Sponsors, researchers and patients all benefit from this better compliance through more accurate, valid, and timely data, improving
the monitoring of patient quality of life during clinical studies.
“The use of QualityMetric’s health outcome assessment tools with our invivosystem handheld platform will enable study sponsors to
increase the quality of data collected from subjects,” added Saul Shiffman, Chief Science Officer for invivodata. “This adds a
dimension to clinical research that will give study sponsors access to better tools to conduct their scientific research. QualityMetric
is unquestionably the leader in health outcome measurement tools, and this partnership will pave the way for more sensitive and data-rich
clinical trials.”
QualityMetric and invivodata will collaborate on both the development and validation of the new formats required for assessments using
handhelds. Changes in the assessments will include modifications made for varying user interfaces, screen size, and momentary versions
of the assessments (in some cases). Once the handheld versions of these assessments are validated, they will be available for license
directly from QualityMetric.
